Job Description: TITLE: Inpatient Wound, Skin, and Ostomy Care Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

SUMMARY: Provides direct clinical care and services to patients and their families; work is performed with general independence and decision-making responsibility in accordance with national nursing specialty standards and guidelines within the Washington State scope of practice for ARNP.

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Patient Care Services
HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary to cover service needs (evening and weekend hours required occasionally).
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director, Nursing Development and Informatics

PREREQUISITES:
Master’s prepared Graduate of an accredited (NLNAN or CCNE) school of nursing with a Masters in Nursing as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) with a focus in wound, skin and ostomy care. Doctorate in Nursing preferred
Active/unrestricted license to practice in WA State as an RN/ARNP.
Nationally certified as a wound, skin and ostomy nurse specialist with 3 years of acute care experience preferred
Current BLS certified.
Minimum of three years’ experience in specialty.
Able to use word processing, graphic and database computer programs, and email.
Evidence of excellent communication and training skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of billing and coding requirements in accordance with hospital, state and federal regulations.
Document in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations
Knowledge of adult learning principles
Knowledge of quality improvement processes
Experience in nursing leadership and staff consultation.
Experience with evidence-based practice and standards development.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional development of all ages served.
Able to handle multiple demands and competing priorities; meets deadlines and commitments.
Ability to collaborate and work in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Patient/Family
Serves as consulting provider of wound, skin and ostomy care services
Participates in development of interdisciplinary/programmatic quality improvement plan by identifying areas for review, assisting with data collection, and establishment and implementation of corrective actions
Provides education to patients and families.
Provides direct care and services for patients and families in the area of specialty.
Conducts daily patient care rounds.
Orders diagnostic and therapeutic interventions consistent with standards of practice.
Utilize prescriptive ability in a manner consistent with standards of practice.
Provide clinical consultation for complex patients to the staff in area of specialty.
Demonstrate continuing clinical competence and confidence in specialty through certification maintenance, continuing education, and work performance.
Consistently demonstrates calm, efficient and professional demeanor; and is tactful and positive in all interactions.

Nurses/Nursing
Function as an expert clinician in assessing, planning, evaluating, and revising the plan of care for patients needing specialty care.
Work collaboratively with educators to maintain and enhance clinical staff competency in the care of patients in this specialty.
Participates in equipment and supply education and training for staff.
Facilitate learning experiences for student nurses and others.
Provide leadership for development of evidence-based policy, procedure, and protocol related to clinical program specific to specialty.
Initiate and/or participate in research projects, performance improvement teams and other work groups as appropriate.
Promote national practice standards from professionally recognized organizations and specialty organizations.

Systems/Organizations
Utilizes chain of command appropriately.
Markets and provides informational updates to referring physicians/LIPs in the community.
Apply evidence-based practice to enhance and broaden the scope of clinical practice and assist with implementation of practice changes in the hospital.
Coordinate selection and evaluation of new products and devices in specialty Collaborate with physician colleagues on select patients and patient populations.
Lead quality management programs in specialty area.
Initiate own leadership in promoting system-wide changes related to specialty area.
Serve on appropriate committees and advisory boards at VMC and in community.
Participate in the development of new programs to improve patient care.
Participate on quality teams related to specialty.
Demonstrate knowledge of community needs and interests and develops creative monitoring mechanisms for meeting those needs.
Participate in continuing education to ensure professional growth.
