General Summary:

Under the supervision of a hyperbaric physician, administers hyperbaric therapy and diagnostic testing to patients. Serves as the facility Hyperbaric Safety Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Hyperbaric Technician:
• Performs the following testing and treatments: transcutaneous oxygen monitoring testing as ordered and per appropriate policies and procedures; blood glucose monitoring as ordered and indicated by patient diagnosis; and hyperbaric treatments per the patient’s treatment plan. Monitors patient during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
• Educates patient and/or patient’s family as to the benefits, risks, contraindications and safety issues of hyperbaric oxygen therapy prior to treatment.
• Evaluates the patient outcome and meets with the manager and the hyperbaric physician to discuss patient treatment and adjust treatment as necessary.
• Takes serial photographs of the wound for patient progress reporting.
• Changes dressings and provides appropriate wound care as ordered. Participates in clinic as required.

Safety Director:
• Ensures department compliance with NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities, Chapter 14, Hyperbaric Facilities and with unit safety policies and procedures.
• Reviews all department safety incidents, collects information regarding equipment/patient safety, reports relevant incidents to the staff, and periodically provides in-service training on accident prevention.
• Works closely with the Medical Director, Administrative Director and Clinical Lead to coordinate and approve all hyperbaric chamber upgrades, modifications and repairs to the hyperbaric system, including interaction with hospital maintenance personnel and outside contractors, to ensure that all maintenance activities are done in accordance with appropriate safety standards. Ensures that the testing of all modifications is performed before manned pressurization.
• Evaluates hyperbaric chamber equipment/supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet all safety requirements before they are permitted inside the chamber.
• Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses approved and recognized decompression procedures for all persons with a hyperbaric exposure to inert gases.
• Serves as one of the hyperbaric facility’s technical trainers for full or part time staff and provides in-service training related to various aspects of hyperbaric physiology, decompression requirements, equipment operations, safety and treatment protocols.
• Generates and supervises hyperbaric chamber safety drills which are tailored to improve staff response to emergency situations.
• Conducts annual review of safety related events to identify trends and monitor improvements.
• Sets up a procedure to assist the Medical Director in reviewing and documenting safety-related events and discusses appropriate events with others to facilitate learning.
• Works closely with the Medical Director to establish minimum staff qualifications, experience and complement based upon the number and type of hyperbaric chambers in use, their maximum treatment capacity and the type of hyperbaric patient therapy normally provided.
• Ensures that all valves, regulators, meters and similar equipment are proper, safe and compensated for use in the hyperbaric environment and are tested in accordance with the routine maintenance program of the facility.
• Ensures that all gas outlets inside and outside the hyperbaric chamber are properly labeled in accordance with CGA C-4,Standard Method of Marketing Portable Compressed Gas Containers to Identify the Material Contained.
• Ensures that all electrical, monitoring, life support, protection and ventilating arrangements in the hyperbaric chamber are inspected and tested as part of the routine maintenance program of the hyperbaric facility.

Required Skills:
• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training
• Current LPN license in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
• Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) preferred
• BLS Certification
• Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills

Required Experience:
• 1 -2 Years of experience in hyperbarics and wound care preferred
• At a minimum, must complete a 40-credit-hour, NBDHMT-approved Hyperbaric Medicine Introductory Course; and a UHMS or NBDHMT-approved hyperbaric safety course
